Hi Isobel, although pets as they age can suffer from altered mentation (recognition etc..etc..) I would advise a vet check just to rule out any potential underlying medical problems such as hyperthyroidism. If the vet exam is clear it would be interesting to know if there are any changes in his environment such as a new cat in the area that may make him reluctant to go out. If he is having accidents n the house and a urine sample is clear it may be worth investing in a litter tray for the house?
