dog collar / harness

before my puppy used to walk fine on his harness then he was ill and was admitted to the vets for 2 days whilst there they put a collar on him he made alot of noise so they moved him to the stable block thing is the put lead on him with the collar and dragged him he was only 10 weeks old since then i cannot walk him if i put collar or harness on he freaks out an hides trembles ive tried everything to get him out of the house but he really freaks if you put any tension on the lead ive had dogs for 25 years so im pretty experienced i really need to sort this as hes 9 month now and gaining weight fast

Hi Lou

What a shame your puppy had such a difficult time.  Obviously you can exercise him using games in the house and garden.  I would try a headcollar, such as, Gencon which does not need to be clipped on or a fixed slip lead which is loose around his neck.  Lure him out of the house with a food reward and just get him to take a few paces and then build up from there.

i have changed my vet ive even tried walking my other dog round the garden on a lead to show him its a good thing but still he freaks out i stood for nearly an hour just hold the lead which is really long to see if he would move on his own but he looks so sad an trembles even with the silk ribbon around his neck rather than a collar he still freaks out and hides till you take it off then hes straight back to his normal lively self really dont know what to do

Awww,bless him,look into clicker training hun,show him the collar and click treat,click,treat for a good few times,everytime he see s the collar yiou treat the hell out of him (with the clicker,the click means,yes,well done,thats what I wanted!!) so,put the collar or harness (I ve always walked my boy on a harness so not to injure his neck x ) and let him go towards it first,click and treat (read up on clicker training first though) build on it,you are the person he trusts,you have to build the trust in his harness again xxx and then even if if you are just sitting outside your door for a week for him to get comfy with it outside the house,build on it,you know your dog and will know how far you can take him with each walk xxx lots of love to you and your pup,hope he will soon enjoy walkies <3

Hi Lou I never put a collar & lead on any of my 6 dogs I always use harnesses on them, but if you are wanting to use a collar & lead, then try leaving the lead on his collar why your at home so your dog knows its not going to hurt him. x
